Someone just tried to assassinate Trump

The insane bias in that article is nauseating.
“Babbitt was shot by a police officer while inside the Capitol during the Jan 6 riots; the man who allegedly attempted to assassinate Trump in July of last year had no clear political motive”
Fuck this author.

If one of those people worked for my company, I would personally bring them into my office to be terminated. (And I’d do the same if a conservative employee reveled in the assassination of a left leaning political commentator). There is no place (in my version of what this nation is supposed to be) for the assassination of dissenting opinions simply because you disagree with those opinions.

Edit: and I feel the same about any employee advocating for civil war. There are plenty of societal and governmental problems that need to be addressed…having Americans declare literal war against other Americans would fix none of them. If anything, it would weaken our country and open the door for some of our real enemies to take over economically, politically, and perhaps even take over our actual resources.

Best thing that can be done in the wake of his death is to amplify his voice. Make his arguments even louder and win by the power of persuasion, not violence. Which was the stated goal of his organization.

“A righteous man burns bright; his echo is louder than the assassin’s rifle and will forever be heard.

His message will live forever.”

-Shawn Ryan

I don’t know if he was quoting someone else or it’s his own original thought but it’s a good sentiment.

I’ve lost at minimum two friends to this, sad to see peoples true colors in their reactions.

Interesting. I read that and have a different reaction. While I give him some grace because today’s events were horrific and unnecessary, I cannot support the position that the people of this country are so different that they cannot coexist and therefore must choose a side for a necessary war (not of words/ideas, but of force) in which one side will lose and the other will win.

In today’s world, the only winner of an American civil war would be China (well, maybe the Soviet Union, Iran, and a few others as well).

The “you are either with us or against us” extremists on the right, and on the left, should take note of the fact that the majority of Americans do not align with either extreme. So then what? Divide America into thirds? That sounds like a hell of a superpower that I’m sure will still have enough geopolitical power and resources to protect its fractured thirds. 😳

Well said. Putin/Xi, etc are celebrating the division.

I felt the same way.

But now the shooting has started.

I understand, and I respect everyone’s right to have their own opinions. But here’s the thing…there have always been, and will always be, sick and crazy individuals from all walks of life who do really horrific shit in the name of religion, politics, racism…whatever.

The rest of us normal people need to take care not to presume that the crazy individual who claims a cause is actually representative of all people with whom we have disagreements.

When one dirty white cop unnecessarily kills a black kid in a traffic stop, we can’t condemn all cops (or white people for that matter). When one crazy black guy inexplicably kills a white girl on a train, we can’t condemn all black people.

Crazy is crazy, and it defies explanation because, by definition, it exists outside of normal and explainable behavior.
