No we’ve done the math. Property taxes on top of income taxes alone will severely limit any retirement. Add in most expensive gasoline and electricity and it’s a no go.

California still has Proposition 13. If you bought your retirement home 47 years ago, you would be just fine. Your $60k house might be worth a couple of million, and the taxes would still be ok.

Arizona has a property tax but they have a wonderful feature in that they can not increase your property value assessment more than 5% per year, and taxes are frozen at the age of 65. We were clueless about Arizona laws, but we bought our house 8 years ago and have benefited immensely by doing so. The value of the house doubled in just over two years!

The devil is in the details, and long term planning can help a lot with retirement.
