My lovely wife has been teaching for 20+ years and has pointed out that her most successful students all have one thing in common- parents who give a fuck and participate in the education. The most important component of the teacher, parent, and student triad is the parent.
Too many parents believe the Gov bullshit that itās āthe schoolās job to educate the kidsā. Kids show up for kindergarten not being able to write their own name, not knowing the alphabet, never having read a book or having had one read to them. Many parents donāt read themselves and do not even have books in their homes.
The culture of ignorance is the issue.
I personally believe there should be no Gov schools. It should all be private and you should be required to pay for it. Schools should be able to refuse kids for lack of performance just as parents should be able to pick schools based on performance. Free Market. Talk about taking ownership- that would do it. Painful? Yes! It appears we need some pain to fix things.
Do some research on the purpose of so called āPublic Educationā and the proponents of it. It was never about your kid, it was to serve the so called āgreater goodā and to make your kids subservient.

Somewhere since then, public education became a disjointed psuedo-government function which answers to the demands of government regulators rather than the parents.
So The People did create public education, but lost control of it.
