Kyburz Fire

Cindy and I were driving back to Tahoe on Hwy 89 this afternoon and was met with quite a bit of smoke in the air. By the time we got to Hwy 50, we noticed that traffic going to the west was closed and a quick look on inciweb showed that there was a growing fire on both sides of 50 just north of Whitehall.

For those of you heading out to the Jeeperz Jamboree from South Lake Tahoe, you're gonna have to find another route to get there.

I saw the initial alert a couple hrs ago, and haven't been able to find any new information since. Hopefully that means they are getting it contained quickly.

As of 9:33 PM, the fire is only 5% contained and it's burned 100 acres.

Wholly crap. I realize Alaska is huge and sparsely populated, but you see the size of some of those fires. Wow.

Yeah, I'd say near half a million acres and in more than one location is the real deal

You know, we never really understood why there were so many fires until we were there. I mean, we knew that the place was dry but didn't really realize how dry. I was seriously worried about every small ember that left the fire at camp. While beautiful, the whole place was like being in a box of matches. :grayno:
