If utility is a must, a Gladiator is a far cry from being really useful. Nothing short of a full size truck, even with a standard bed will get you that.

Rotational movement is 100% normal. A shifting side to side or up and down is an indication of a worn out joint. Unless your mechanic specified what he was seeing, I would say he's just trying to upsell you on work you don't need.
